Olmedo Romo, Fausto’s uncle, was a pioneer in coffee in the region of Pichincha, being one of the first people in this region to plant coffee trees. Meanwhile, Fausto bought himself land and started to rear cattle. Olmedo spent a lot of time trying to convince his nephew to switch to coffee production, triumphing the benefits of sustainability and compared to cattle farming, very good profits. But it wasn’t until a conversation with his cousin Ramiro that Fausto made the switch. After Olmedo had died Ramiro, his son, approached Fausto, armed with coffee seeds to beg him to at least try coffee production. A desire to honour his uncle combined with cattle farming becoming less profitable lead to Fausto make a shift. Instead of planting one hectare as his uncle had previously suggested as a first step, Fausto sold 10 of his 15 cows and planted coffee across the whole farm.
