At one point not long ago the San Martín region was one of the poorest in Peru. In this stretch between the Andes on the east and the Cordillera, Azúl Farmers had long relied on growing coca to survive. In the early 2000s, there was a big initiative to move away from this industry and diversify to cacao, honey and coffee. within 8 years poverty was down by 70%. Diamanté’s Verde is a collective formed in 2017 with a focus on improving farmers quality of life through coffee production. The group now with 206 members are also committed to sustainability and have since inception been organic and fair trade certified.
