The Mururandia Farmers Cooperative Society has three wet mills and was formed in 1997. These wet mills are all in Murang’a county. Which for a lot of people is the birthplace of the Kenyan Independence movement. British Colonisation of the region started in the late 1800s and, often violent resistance started at the same time. But in the 1940s the KLFA (Kenyan Land and Freedom Army) was formed. This was the first guerrilla army to organise to fight for Kenyan independence. This war continued until the 1960s. Although the war ended with most of the KLFA being imprisoned or executed the British empire realised that this marked a change they needed to make reforms. One of the first changes was to make it easier for Kenyans to grow coffee. A major cash crop previously exclusive to European settlers.
