Alexander Vargas is a dedicated coffee producer based in Palestina, Huila, Colombia, growing exceptional Pink Bourbon at 1,900 masl. His journey began at just 13, working on a neighbor’s farm that was an early adopter of specialty coffee practices in South Huila. After years of saving, he bought 11 hectares of land in 2008 and has since expanded to manage 14 hectares of coffee, also processing cherries for neighboring farmers. Known for his meticulous approach, Alexander uses extended fermentation and a fully washed process, even hiring labor to manually select cherries and parchment to avoid phenolic defects caused by high-altitude challenges. A multiple-time Cup of Excellence competitor—placing 7th in 2021—he continues to innovate, recently reintroducing shade trees to improve biodiversity and soil health. Beyond coffee, Alexander grows pitaya, yuca, and beans, both to support his household and create more stable year-round employment for his workers.
