Maria Villamizar is the child of coffee farmers. Her parents produced coffee in a traditional manner, selling their coffee to local traders. Thinking back to these times Maria has many fond memories of the good experiences she had during harvest time. She has now inherited the land and is continuing to produce coffee hoping that her children will have the same positive experience growing up on the farm as she did. Initially Maria continued with the same model her parents had. Selling to local traders for the commodity and commercial markets. Until recently, when she met with some cuppers who assured her the quality of her coffee was very high and even has potential to improve. This year after that meeting, Maria was able to sell her coffee to roasters as a single producer lot for the first time. Previously her coffee was blended with poorer quality coffee from neighbouring farms. Maria is also acutely aware of climate change and has made a decision to stop using synthetic fertilisers and instead plant her coffee among shade trees which provide nutrients to the soil as they go through their cycle.
